Clearly, this was noticed by Rav Israel Salanter who saw that the essence of Torah is Monotheism with good Midot [good character traits], not religions fanaticism. But that did not help after the first few generations of Musar. Eventually, it became another sort of religious fanaticism. [See: Geschwind Syndrome]

later note from 2026 may 11, i have been thinking that the problem is two fold. part one is that a person needs to know the hierarchy of values in torah -and to guard that ordee of vales at all cost and not to budge. the other half is group identity. when one is willing to change one belliefs because of group identity that is bthe road to hell.
